Have your say on the proposed design for Norwich Market

We want your feedback on the proposed improvements to Norwich Market. Your views will help shape the final design. The survey can be completed anonymously and all responses will be used to inform decision-making.

Proposals include:

  1. Seating – Create a covered seating area inside the market, giving visitors a comfortable place to sit all year round.
  2. Adding rear market stalls – Introduce a new row of stalls so the market will support the same number of businesses after the works.
  3. Upgrading the toilets – Renovate the toilets to provide modern, clean and accessible facilities.
  4. Wayfinding – Improve signage and gateways to make it easier to enter and navigate the market.
  5. The Undercroft - Create a secure storage area for traders and retain space for community art.
  6. Canopies – Install durable new aisle canopies for better shelter and weather protection while keeping the market’s iconic look.
  7. Repairs – Carry out essential repairs to improve existing structures to minimise disruption.
  8. Safety, security and lighting - Enhance lighting, CCTV and security measures to create a well-lit, safe and welcoming space.

1. Seating

You said:

  • The existing benches are secluded and can attract anti-social behaviour.
  • The open environment is vulnerable to pigeons and seagulls.
  • There's currently no comfortable, covered space for people to sit, eat and socialise.

What we propose:

  • Create a central, covered seating area inside the market, giving visitors a comfortable place to sit all year round.
  • We will create a flexible seating area by removing three trading blocks.
  • The displaced stalls will be relocated to improved spots within the new layout or into existing vacant space.

Why:

  • Creates a vibrant heart for the market.
  • Provides comfortable, all-weather seating protected from pests.
  • The area can be safely managed and deter anti-social behaviour.
  • Boosts business by improving visibility and increasing footfall.

How do you feel about changing the layout to add more seating in the market?

2. Rear market stalls

You said:

  • You’re concerned about losing stalls and trading space.
  • The area along the Memorial Gardens wall feels quiet, dark and lacks energy.

What we propose:

  • Create a new row of stalls along the Memorial Gardens perimeter.
  • These stalls will replace those moved to create the central seating area and offer a different type of stall for traders.

Why:

  • Transforms an under-used edge of the market into a vibrant trading area.
  • Improves security by increasing activity and footfall.
  • Adds variety to the market’s offer and retains stall space.

How do you feel about adding more stalls at the rear of the market?
