Norwich Market is the heart of our city centre, but it needs some care to reach its full potential.
Over the past nine months, we’ve listened to traders, customers and the wider public. Your feedback has helped us understand what you value most and what needs to change.
What you told us you love:
What you told us isn't working:
The vibrant atmosphere and sense of community
The market's iconic colourful striped roofs
It's historic setting in the heart of the city
The variety of stalls and food
Toilets that are dated and unpleasant
A confusing layout that makes it hard to move around
A lack of covered seating areas
Essential repairs needed to stalls (gutters and shutters)
We’ve developed proposals that keep the things you love while addressing the issues you raised. We’ve designed these improvements to minimise disruption to trade, using off-site fabrication and phased delivery wherever possible. Importantly, the market will support the same number of businesses after the works. Our goal is simple: to make Norwich Market more comfortable, vibrant and ready for the future.
Our preferred design focuses on:
Improving the daily experience: Upgrading toilets, adding clearer signage for easier navigation and providing dedicated trader storage.
Creating a destination for day and night: Introducing a central covered seating area to protect from the weather and improving lighting and security.
Upgrading the market structure: Making essential repairs and adding new amenities and functional spaces to enhance the experience for traders and customers.
You can also join us at a drop-in session at Norwich Market (Aisle A, Stalls 28 & 29) on Friday 12 and Saturday 13 December, 11am–4pm. If you can’t attend the session but want to view in person, you can view them at City Hall’s customer contact centre during opening hours.
All feedback will be considered, and the final proposals will be shaped by your ideas and concerns wherever possible.
The consultation is open from Tuesday 2 December 2025 until Sunday 4 January 2026.
