The consultation has now concluded.

St Georges play area with the current swing set, benches, slide and see-saw.

The St Georges Street play area is getting an upgrade!

The play area is an inner-city play park opposite Norwich Playhouse. The park is well-loved by children of all ages but used most by pre-schoolers. The upgrade will involve replacing the current equipment, flooring and fencing.

Thank you to the 442 people who responded to the first survey.

The results were tight with 56% preferring the urban over the traditional re-design concept. The feedback suggested combining the two concepts to cater for the range of ages.

Other feedback included:

  • Prioritising age inclusion by catering to ages 2-12 years
  • Inclusive and accessible design allowing all abilities access to the play area
  • Including variation to drive imaginative play scenarios
  • Providing a multitude of activities that stimulate physical and cognitive skills

The parks and open spaces team invited three suppliers to design a play area based on this feedback. We now invite you to select your favourite design for St Georges.

The new playground at St Georges is now open!

Thank you for your patience during the construction and we can't wait to hear and see what you think of the new playground.

Norwich City Councillor Adam Giles, cabinet member for communities and social inclusion, said: “We’re delighted the St Georges play area is now fully open again for everyone in the local community to explore and enjoy. Our thanks go to the children, parents, carers and other family members who took part in the public consultation and responded in large numbers with detailed feedback to help choose such a colourful, accessible and engaging design. Encouragement to use their imaginations is such a vital component in young children’s development and we hope families will make full use of the new equipment.”

Thank you to everyone who engaged with the project to upgrade the St Georges Street play area!

Here is a summary of the results and the final design.

We asked whether you would like an urban or traditional re-design concept?

You said a blend of urban and traditional would best suit the area and cater to a wider range of ages and abilities.

We asked you to select your favourite of the three designs.

The most popular design was the ocean theme.

We asked what else you would like to see included?

    You said:

    • variation to encourage imaginative play
    • inclusive and accessible design choices
    • interactive and accessible flooring
    • plenty of bins and benches with back support
    • the proposed swing seat should be replaced with a double toddler seat
    • the static ship should be replaced with a seated spinner
    • a lighter shade of blue should be used

With the results of the consultation and all feedback in mind, the contract has been awarded to Sutcliffe Play's ocean themed design!

The final design has been amended to reflect the above feedback and conversations with park users.

Thank you again to everyone who engaged with this project.

Installation is due to start October 2023 and project updates will be posted on Get Talking Norwich.
