Sloughbottom Park is set to undergo improvements thanks to funding from the UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund. Norwich City Council is delivering a redevelopment project focused on health, wellbeing and inclusive access for all park users. Work is expected to be completed by autumn 2027.

The project will upgrade sports facilities, pathways, and the locally listed pavilion, and introduce a brand-new play area designed to reflect the park’s natural character and community spirit.

Design principles: nature, inclusivity and community

Based on feedback from earlier citywide play area consultations, three play area designs have been developed. Each design includes inclusive features such as ground level play elements, wide access points, sensory play opportunities and equipment that enables side-by-side play for children with different needs. The designs aim to celebrate nature and the park's heritage, offer play for varied abilities and encourage imaginative, physical and social play. They also feature playful details like circular swings, trampolines, robinia springies and themed seating - look out for bumblebees, ladybirds and dragonflies!

The three design options

Option 1: The Great Owl

A large sculptural owl creates a magical focal point. Children can climb inside and explore, enjoying a birds-eye view from the owl’s eyes. This design blends into the landscape and celebrates local wildlife. It’s unique to Sloughbottom Park and designed to spark storytelling and imaginative play.

Option 2: Ecology Giants

This multi-level tower offers slides, lookout points and climbing challenges. It’s designed to build confidence and coordination across a wide age range. A double zipwire adds extra excitement just beyond the multi-use games area (MUGA).

Option 3: The Nest

This climbing structure uses rope nets to promote balance, strength and coordination. Its open design allows multiple children to play together and blends naturally into the park’s landscape. Like Option 2, it includes a double zipwire near the MUGA.
